Osborn Nweze Umahi, the 28-year-old son of Minister of Works, David Umahi, has emerged as Chairman of Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Umahi secured victory in the local government election following a campaign centred on grassroots mobilisation, economic development and improved administration.
His emergence places him among the younger politicians taking on executive responsibilities at the grassroots level.
Umahi Promises to Work Without Salary
Shortly after being declared winner, the new council chairman announced that he would not collect his salary or official allowances throughout his tenure.
Umahi said the decision was motivated by his desire to redirect public resources towards development projects and services that would directly benefit residents of Ohaozara.
Rather than treating public office as a source of personal financial gain, he said his administration would focus on using available resources to address the needs of the people.
Focus on Youths, Infrastructure and Economic Development
Umahi also outlined plans to prioritise infrastructure, youth empowerment, economic opportunities and improved service delivery across the local government.
During his campaign, he presented himself as a representative of a younger generation seeking to bring new ideas and a different approach to grassroots governance.
He pledged to introduce greater efficiency, innovation and private-sector thinking into the administration of Ohaozara Local Government.
According to him, effective local government remains critical to addressing the everyday economic and social challenges confronting citizens.
A New Generation of Leadership
The election of the 28-year-old comes against the backdrop of increasing calls for younger Nigerians to take greater responsibility in political leadership.
Umahi’s decision to forgo his official remuneration is likely to attract public attention, particularly amid continuing debates about the cost of governance and the resources available to local governments.
However, the success of the pledge will ultimately be measured not only by whether he declines his salary and allowances, but by the quality, transparency and measurable impact of his administration.
For residents of Ohaozara, the expectation will now be that the new administration translates its campaign promises into tangible improvements in infrastructure, employment opportunities and basic services.
Umahi begins his tenure with a high-profile political background, but his performance in office will ultimately determine how his leadership is judged.
The people of Ohaozara will now be watching to see whether the young chairman can turn his promise of sacrifice and innovation into practical grassroots development.
