A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) backed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has elected Senator Samuel Anyanwu and Abdulrahman Mohammed as National Secretary and National Chairman respectively.
The development followed a factional national convention held in Abuja, amid the lingering leadership crisis rocking the opposition party.
Sources within the party said the emergence of Anyanwu and Mohammed was based on a consensus arrangement endorsed by stakeholders aligned with the Wike bloc.
However, the outcome has further deepened divisions within the PDP, as governors and other party leaders distanced themselves from the process, describing it as flawed and unconstitutional.
The governors’ camp has reportedly rejected the factional leadership and is considering legal options to challenge the exercise, insisting on a unified and legitimate convention.
The PDP has been engulfed in a protracted leadership crisis, with rival factions laying claim to the National Working Committee (NWC) following disputes over previous conventions and court rulings.

Court decisions in recent months have also complicated the situation, including rulings that nullified earlier party processes and heightened tensions among key stakeholders.
Despite calls for reconciliation, both camps appear to be holding firm, raising concerns about the party’s unity and readiness ahead of the 2027 general elections.
