Nigerian music star Peter Okoye has responded sharply to criticism trailing his decision to change his birthday celebration date, insisting that the backlash is unwarranted.

The singer, popularly known as Mr P and formerly of the defunct duo P-Square, had earlier announced that he would no longer celebrate his birthday on November 18, opting instead for November 30 a move he described as a personal choice.

Reacting to the criticism on social media, Okoye questioned why many Nigerians appeared angered by a decision that concerns only him.

“Una dey vex like say I cancel Christmas? Na my birthday date I move… no be your own, why e dey pain you?” he wrote.

He further compared the debate to longstanding disagreements over the date of Jesus Christ’s birth, arguing that public outrage over his decision was exaggerated.

The artiste also criticised what he described as misplaced priorities, suggesting that the attention given to his birthday change was disproportionate when compared with more pressing national issues.

Okoye concluded with a defiant message to critics, stating that insults would not diminish his success and urging detractors to focus on their own concerns.

The controversy has since sparked widespread debate on social media, with opinions divided between those defending his right to personal choices and others questioning the motive behind the unusual move.
