A senior police commissioner has advised Nigerians not to allow police officers to search their mobile phones solely because they are suspected of being involved in internet fraud, popularly known as “Yahoo Yahoo.”
The police chief explained that officers do not have unrestricted powers to search the phones or other personal digital devices of citizens without following the procedures laid down by law.
According to him, suspicion alone does not justify a phone search, stressing that law enforcement officers must operate within the confines of the law and respect the constitutional rights of Nigerians.
He emphasized that citizens should remain calm and cooperate with lawful police investigations but also be aware of their legal rights during encounters with security personnel.
The commissioner noted that where a phone search is required as part of a criminal investigation, it should be carried out in accordance with due process and relevant legal provisions.
He further urged police officers nationwide to conduct themselves professionally, respect human rights and avoid actions capable of eroding public confidence in the force.
The statement comes amid growing public concern over reports of alleged indiscriminate phone searches and harassment of young Nigerians by some security operatives under the guise of investigating internet fraud.
The police authorities have continued to stress the importance of professionalism, accountability and respect for the rule of law in the discharge of policing responsibilities across the country.
