Prince Paul Ikonne, former Executive Secretary of the National Agricultural Lands Development Authority (NALDA), has congratulated Nigeria’s Super Falcons for their historic victory at the Africa Women’s Nations Cup, while calling for urgent action to revive sports particularly football in Abia State.

In a press statement released through his Chief Press Secretary, Dr. Ujo Justice, Prince Ikonne hailed the Super Falcons for their resilience, discipline, and patriotism, describing their victory as a source of immense pride and unity for the nation. He noted that their performance has once again confirmed Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s football and underscored the untapped potential in the country’s sports sector.
“This remarkable victory has placed Nigeria at the top of African women’s football once more. It shows that with the right support, Nigerian athletes can excel globally,” he said.
However, Ikonne used the moment of national celebration to highlight the sharp contrast in Abia State, where he expressed concern over the decline of Enyimba Football Club of Aba. Once celebrated as Nigeria’s most successful football club and two-time CAF Champions League winners, Enyimba FC, according to Ikonne, has lost its glory due to mismanagement, political interference, and lack of proper investment.

“Enyimba FC is more than just a football club; it’s a symbol of pride for Aba and Abia State. Unfortunately, the club has been reduced to a struggling entity due to politicization and poor leadership. We must bring Enyimba back to its days of continental greatness,” he stated.
Prince Ikonne urged the Abia State Government to urgently depoliticize the management of the club and invest in modern infrastructure, competent administration, and a professional sporting structure. He emphasized that beyond entertainment, sports can serve as a powerful tool for youth development, job creation, and economic growth.

“As we celebrate the Super Falcons’ success, let us not ignore the neglect that has crippled sports in our state. Enyimba FC and the youth of Abia deserve a chance to thrive. Sports should unite, inspire, and empower not frustrate and divide,” he added.
Ikonne reaffirmed his commitment to supporting youth and sports development in Abia and urged stakeholders to take meaningful steps toward restoring Enyimba’s place among Africa’s football elite.
