Momentum is building behind the call for the creation of Aba State, with leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the Ukwa La Ngwa bloc declaring their full support for the move while sharply criticizing Governor Alex Otti for opposing it.

This stance was made public during a well-attended stakeholders’ meeting held in Obohia Ndoki, Ukwa East Local Government Area. APC leaders from all nine local government areas within Ukwa La Ngwa were in attendance. The meeting was hosted by Comrade Benedict Godson, a former Publicity Secretary of the APC in Abia State.
During the gathering, Chief Ebere Nwachukwu, who coordinates the Ukwa La Ngwa APC Forum, condemned Governor Otti’s position, stating it reflected a long-standing pattern of opposition from the Old Bende political bloc. Nwachukwu also defended Prince Paul Ikonne, who had earlier confronted the governor over his stance on Aba State.
Supporting the viability of the proposed state, Chief Sylvanus Nwaji, former chairman of Ukwa West LGA, highlighted the region’s oil and gas resources and the economic strength of Aba as a commercial hub. Elder Godwin Nna, former Obingwa chairman, traced the roots of the Aba State movement to Ukwa land, noting that they were the first to push for the state before Ngwa leaders joined the campaign. He even proposed renaming the rest of Abia as “Bende State” should Aba State be created.
Chief Eruba Dimgba, Abia’s representative at the NDDC and secretary of the Forum, used the occasion to applaud President Bola Tinubu for approving $3 billion for the Eastern Railway Line project—a move he described as timely and commendable.
Several prominent APC figures also attended the meeting and declared their backing for Aba State. Among them were Chief Donatus Nwankpa, Chief Marc Wabara, Senator Nkechi Nwogu, Chief Sam Nkire, Hon. Uzor Azubuike, Dr. Nyere Anyim, and Mr. Obinna Oriaku.
In his closing remarks, Godson praised Chief Nwankpa for his efforts in unifying APC stakeholders in the Aba zone and emphasized that with a united front, “Ukwa La Ngwa cannot be ignored in the politics of Abia State.”
