Six men were killed and three women injured in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast suspected to have been planted by the Lakurawa terrorist group in Gwabro village, Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon during Eid-el-Kabir celebrations. According to local sources, the victims who were participating in traditional holiday visits between villageswere walking from Gwabro to nearby Zurmuku when they inadvertently triggered the explosive device.
“They were innocent villagers on a customary visit when the tragedy struck,” a source said. “They likely came into contact with the device without realizing its danger.”
The Sokoto State Police Command spokesperson, ASP Ahmed Rufai, confirmed the casualties, stating that six men lost their lives while three women sustained serious injuries. The injured were transported to Tangaza General Hospital for treatment.

Efforts to reach the Chairman of Tangaza Local Government were unsuccessful at the time of reporting. However, the council’s Special Adviser on Security Matters, Alhaji Garzali Raka, confirmed that the deceased were buried in accordance with Islamic rites.
The attack has heightened concerns over the growing presence and activities of the Lakurawa terrorist group, which has reportedly been operating across Sokoto and Kebbi states.
