Tragedy struck in Imo State on June 24, 2025, as an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) detonated at Eke Ubaheze Market in Awo-Idemili, Orsu Local Government Area, killing at least six people and injuring several others.
Eyewitnesses say the explosion occurred when a middle-aged woman, identified as Ngozi Umeh, unknowingly stepped on the device, causing panic across Ubaheze and surrounding communities.

In a statement, the Imo State Police Command confirmed the incident, noting that preliminary investigations suggest the IED may have been planted by suspected IPOB/ESN operatives. Police spokesperson Henry Okoye said one fatality had been officially confirmed, with five others injured.
He added that Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, swiftly deployed bomb disposal and tactical teams to secure the area. The market has since been declared safe, and a full-scale investigation is underway to apprehend the culprits.
