The successful rescue of pupils and teachers abducted from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State has brought joy to many families, but for the relatives of slain teacher Michael Olugbade Oyedokun, the moment remains one of profound grief.

Oyedokun, a mathematics teacher, was among those abducted during the attack on schools in May. While dozens of pupils and teachers regained their freedom after spending 56 days in captivity, he never returned alive.

Reacting to the release of the surviving victims, Oyedokun’s niece, who had served as the family’s spokesperson throughout the ordeal, said her family was grateful that other parents and relatives had been reunited with their loved ones. However, she noted that their own celebration would forever be overshadowed by the loss of her uncle.

She described the rescue as bittersweet, saying that while many homes are celebrating, her family’s dining table will always have an empty seat—a painful reminder of a loved one whose life was cut short.

The emotional reaction has resonated with many Nigerians, highlighting the lasting impact of violent attacks on schools and the emotional scars left on families, even after successful rescue operations.

The rescued pupils and teachers have since been reunited with their families and are receiving medical attention and psychosocial support following their traumatic experience. Authorities have also pledged to ensure justice for the victims and hold those responsible for the abduction and killings accountable.

While the nation celebrates the safe return of the surviving captives, the story of Michael Oyedokun serves as a solemn reminder of the human cost of insecurity and the need for sustained efforts to protect schools, teachers, and students across Nigeria.
