Troops operating in Taraba State have arrested a suspected gunrunner found in possession of six machine guns and other weapons, security sources confirmed on Friday. The arrest took place in Jalingo, the state capital, as part of intensified military efforts to disrupt the flow of illicit arms and strengthen regional security.

According to the army, the operation was conducted by troops attached to the 13 Brigade, who received credible intelligence about the illegal arms dealer’s activities. Acting swiftly on the information, the soldiers intercepted the suspect before a planned transfer of the weapons could occur, preventing the potentially dangerous cache from reaching criminal networks.

During the operation, the troops recovered six machine guns, ammunition, and additional military-grade equipment. Security officials said the seizure underscores ongoing concerns about the proliferation of arms across parts of northern and central Nigeria, where gunmen and organised criminal groups frequently exploit weak borders and unsecured routes.

The suspect was taken into custody and handed over to military intelligence operatives for further investigation. Authorities said efforts are underway to interrogate the individual and trace suspected collaborators and supply chains that could link to larger criminal syndicates operating in the region.

Taraba residents welcomed news of the arrest, expressing hope that the development would contribute to improved security in the state. Citizens thanked the military for proactive action, noting that illegal weapons are often cited as a major driver of violence, kidnappings, and unrest in neighbouring communities.

Security analysts say the arrest and seizure highlight the challenges facing Nigeria’s counter-insurgency and internal security apparatus, urging continuous intelligence-led operations. They also emphasised the need for cooperative efforts among community members, law enforcement agencies, and military authorities to sustain gains in stabilising volatile areas.
