United States military aircraft have landed in Borno State and other parts of northeast Nigeria to deliver ammunition and equipment, officials and security sources say, in a development that underscores growing military cooperation between Nigeria and the U.S. The deployment, which took place between Thursday and Friday, forms part of an agreed security support programme aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s fight against insurgency and violent extremism.
Senior officers at the Nigerian Defence Headquarters confirmed that the American aircraft carried ammunition intended to bolster ongoing counter-insurgency operations in insurgency-affected areas. One officer described the deliveries as routine logistical support following recent bilateral engagements between both countries on security matters.
The aircraft — reported to include heavy transport planes — were sighted landing at military facilities, including the airbase in Maiduguri, capital of Borno State, where cargo was offloaded. Local reports also suggested movements involving U.S. Air Force transport flights that may be part of a larger stream of logistical reinforcement to Nigeria under coordinated military planning.
According to defence sources, the ammunition and equipment are expected to support Nigerian troops engaged in counter-terrorism operations against groups such as Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in the northeast. Officials noted that supplies like ammunition are critical to sustain extended ground operations and maintain pressure on armed groups.

The deliveries coincide with earlier reports that the first contingent of about 100 U.S. military personnel had already landed in northeast Nigeria to provide technical support, intelligence expertise and training to Nigerian forces as part of a broader anti-terrorism collaboration. Analysts say this reflects an expanding security cooperation framework between Abuja and Washington.
While the Defence Headquarters has not issued a full official statement, observers see the development as a continuation of enhanced bilateral engagement following previous American air operations and intelligence support activities in Nigeria. The reinforcement is expected to contribute to stabilisation efforts as Nigerian troops persist in their campaign to degrade insurgent capabilities and restore security across volatile regions.
