Authorities in Cross River State are working to calm tensions in Calabar following a tragic incident in which a policeman, reportedly suffering from mental instability, opened fire, killing three people and injuring several others.
The Cross River State Police Command confirmed that the shooting occurred early Sunday morning, before 6:00 am, at the Atakpa Divisional Police Headquarters, near the popular Watt Market in Calabar. The sudden outbreak of violence caused panic, with residents fleeing for safety.
In an official statement, Superintendent Irene Ugbo, the Police Public Relations Officer, assured the public that efforts were underway to engage key stakeholders and de-escalate the situation.
Incident Details
According to the statement, the officer involved, Inspector Effiong Bassey, was stationed at the Atakpa Divisional Headquarters. Upon returning from night duty at Ekondo Microfinance Bank, he exhibited erratic behavior, armed himself with an AK-47 rifle, and began shooting indiscriminately.
Inspector Bassey reportedly refused to surrender his weapon and blocked the station’s entrance, preventing access to and from the premises. Attempts by colleagues to pacify him proved futile, leading to a confrontation that resulted in the fatal shootings.
Among those killed was Ijeoma Wilson Obot, a 41-year-old woman. Two other victims, identified as Charles Mkpang and an unnamed individual, sustained gunshot wounds but are currently receiving medical treatment and are in stable condition.
Response and Investigation
Following the incident, tactical units and patrol teams were deployed to contain the situation. Inspector Bassey was eventually subdued, disarmed, arrested, and placed in custody.
The police have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the officer’s actions. Meanwhile, senior police officials, including Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 6 Headquarters, Mohammed Bala, and the Cross River State Command Management Team, visited the hospital where the injured victims are being treated.

Expressing condolences to the families of the deceased and wishing the injured a speedy recovery, the Police Command urged the public to remain calm as the investigation continues.
