A new phase of violent escalation erupted in the Middle East Friday night as Iran launched a barrage of ballistic missiles into Israeli territory in retaliation for deadly Israeli airstrikes on key Iranian nuclear and military sites.
Loud explosions rocked Tel Aviv and Jerusalem as air raid sirens blared across Israel, with residents reporting bright flashes and plumes of smoke lighting up the skies.
The development follows a series of coordinated Israeli attacks earlier in the week that reportedly killed several high-ranking Iranian military commanders and senior nuclear scientists. In response, Iran vowed a “proportionate and firm” reprisal.
Iranian state media confirmed the launch of over 100 drones and missiles toward Israeli targets. However, Israel’s military reported that fewer than 100 projectiles were fired and claimed the majority were intercepted by its advanced air defense systems.
Despite the defenses, at least three fatalities have been reported in Israel. Emergency services, including Magen David Adom (MDA), said 21 individuals were injured in the Coastal Plains region. Among the casualties, a woman in her 60s was found unconscious and without vital signs, while a man in his mid-40s was confirmed dead at the scene.
Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, issued a stern warning, accusing Israel of triggering open warfare. “The Zionist regime will not escape the consequences of its crimes. The Iranian people must be assured that our response will be complete and uncompromising,” he declared.
Israel has responded with sustained air operations, reportedly deploying 200 fighter jets and striking over 100 targets across Iran.
The situation remains fluid, with growing international concern over the potential for a broader regional war involving allied nations on both sides. Diplomats and world leaders are urging restraint, even as both Tehran and Tel Aviv signal readiness for further confrontation.
