In a major political shake-up in Kano State, thousands of members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have defected to the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), led by former presidential candidate and ex-governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. The mass defection was announced by Kwankwaso on Friday via his official X handle, describing it as a “momentous occasion.”
“Yesterday was a momentous occasion, as I received thousands of defectors from the All Progressives Congress (APC) into the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP),” Kwankwaso stated.
The event, which took place at his residence in Kano, saw Kwankwaso welcome the new members with a promise of fair treatment and full integration into the party. He credited the NNPP’s rising appeal to what he described as “distinguished political leadership” in Kano, adding that this leadership style continues to attract disillusioned members of rival parties.
“Our leadership style in Kano is making waves, and it’s encouraging more people to join our party,” Kwankwaso said. “I urge others who are considering a change to join us without hesitation.”
This wave of defections represents a significant political win for the NNPP in Kano, a state long considered a crucial battleground in Nigeria’s political landscape. Analysts believe the move signals deepening discontent within the APC’s local structure and highlights Kwankwaso’s sustained political clout through his Kwankwasiyya Movement.

As of now, the APC has not responded officially to the defections. However, the development is expected to further intensify political competition in the state ahead of upcoming elections.
