President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Professor Segun Aina as the new Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, marking a significant transition in Nigeria’s education sector.
The appointment was announced on Thursday in a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. According to the statement, Aina will succeed Professor Ishaq Oloyede, whose tenure officially expires on July 31, 2026.
At 39 years old, Aina becomes one of the youngest individuals ever appointed to lead the examination body. The Presidency described him as a seasoned academic and systems expert with extensive experience in digital infrastructure, examination management, and institutional reform.
Aina is currently a Professor of Computer Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Systems Engineering from the University of Kent, alongside a Master’s degree in Internet Computing and Network Security and a PhD in Digital Signal Processing from Loughborough University in the United Kingdom.
The Presidency further revealed that the incoming registrar has over 15 years of professional experience advising federal and state governments on digital transformation and institutional systems development. He has also worked with examination bodies such as NECO and NABTEB on ICT-driven reforms and examination integrity systems.
Aina’s appointment comes at a critical time for JAMB as the board continues to modernize its operations and strengthen the credibility of Nigeria’s tertiary admission process.
Outgoing registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, has widely been credited with transforming JAMB since assuming office in 2016. Under his leadership, the board introduced sweeping digital reforms, improved transparency, and significantly increased remittances to the Federal Government.
President Tinubu expressed confidence that Aina would build on the achievements of his predecessor and further strengthen the institution’s efficiency and credibility.
The statement added that the President expects the new registrar to leverage his expertise and practical experience to elevate the board beyond its current achievements.
