Nigerian sprint hurdler Tobi Amusan has won Nigeria’s first gold medal at the 2026 African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana, after triumphing in the women’s 100 metres hurdles final.

The world record holder defeated Zimbabwe’s Ashley Miller to claim the continental title, while fellow Nigerian hurdler Adaobi Tabugbo secured bronze to complete a strong outing for Team Nigeria in the event.

The victory marked Amusan’s third African Championships gold medal in the women’s 100m hurdles, further reinforcing her dominance in African athletics.

Reports from the championships indicated that organisers experienced technical difficulties with the timing system during the competition, delaying the release of official race times and drawing criticism from athletes and observers.

Despite the challenges, Amusan dominated the event from the heats through to the semi-finals before sealing victory in the final.

Nigeria also recorded additional podium finishes on Day Two of the championships. Chidera Ezeakor won bronze in the men’s 100 metres event, while Rosemary Chukwuma secured silver in the women’s 100 metres race.

The championships, organised by the Confederation of African Athletics, continue in Accra with several Nigerian athletes expected to compete in relay and field events in the coming days.

Amusan, who became the first Nigerian athlete to win a gold medal at the World Athletics Championships in 2022, remains one of Africa’s most decorated track athletes.
