Tony Agbanyim, Chairman of the Association of Former Elected Councilors of Abia State (1999–2022), has publicly apologized to the people of Ngwa land over a joke he made on the association’s platform, saying it was never intended to offend or demean the community.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Agbanyim expressed deep regret over the reaction his comment generated, acknowledging that some members of the Ngwa community and others of Ngwa extraction were hurt by the remark.
According to him, the comment was made in jest and did not reflect his views or feelings toward the Ngwa people, whom he described as hospitable, hardworking, and culturally rich.
Agbanyim highlighted his long-standing relationship with Aba and the Ngwa people, noting that he was raised in Aba, got married there, built his business and political career in the city, and has spent more than four decades living and interacting with the people of the area.
He said his close ties with the community have earned him acceptance among many Ngwa indigenes, stressing that a single joke should not overshadow decades of friendship, mutual respect, and shared experiences.
The former councilors’ chairman also rejected any interpretation that portrayed the Ngwa people negatively, emphasizing that they are a people of integrity and should not be subjected to unfair stereotypes.
Agbanyim further recalled using his radio programme on Magic FM Aba to promote the traditions, hospitality, and accommodating nature of the Ngwa people, describing Aba as a city known for its warmth and inclusiveness.
“I sincerely apologize to the entire Ngwa nation. I never intended to offend anyone. I value our relationship and the unity that binds us together. I respectfully ask for your forgiveness and understanding,” he said.
He reaffirmed his commitment to promoting peace, mutual respect, human rights, and unity among all Abians and the Igbo people, while pledging to exercise greater caution in his public comments going forward.
