United States President Donald Trump has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as decisive leadership in tackling terrorism and insecurity in Nigeria, particularly attacks targeting Christian communities.
According to a statement issued by the Presidency, Trump conveyed his commendation in a letter dated July 6, 2026, expressing appreciation for Tinubu’s commitment to confronting security challenges and reaffirming the United States’ support for Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts.
The US President said both countries share a common objective of combating terrorism and violent extremism, noting that the 2026 US–Nigeria Defence Cooperation Roadmap has significantly strengthened military and security collaboration between the two nations.
Trump disclosed that the United States has deployed Special Operations Forces to support the Armed Forces of Nigeria through specialised training, intelligence sharing and operational assistance aimed at improving the country’s capacity to combat terrorist groups.
The Presidency stated that recent cooperation between Nigeria and the United States has focused on enhancing military capabilities through joint training programmes, intelligence collaboration and coordinated security operations.
It added that one of the recent joint operations in the Lake Chad region reportedly led to the elimination of a senior ISIS commander, highlighting the growing effectiveness of bilateral security cooperation.
The statement further noted that both countries remain committed to expanding defence and intelligence partnerships to address terrorism, insurgency and other transnational security threats.
The United States also pledged to deepen its security cooperation with Nigeria following recent high-level engagements between officials of both governments, reaffirming its support for efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability across affected regions.
