Washington, D.C. – U.S. President Donald Trump sparked fresh headlines on Friday after posting a digitally altered image of himself dressed as the pope on his Truth Social platform.
The AI-generated image shows Trump clad in traditional papal regalia white robes, a gold crucifix, and the signature miter raising his right index finger skyward.
The post comes days after Trump jokingly told reporters he would like to be the next pope, just ahead of the conclave to elect a successor to Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21.
Asked directly who he believed should succeed the late pontiff, Trump quipped,
“I’d like to be pope, that would be my number one choice.” He added that while he had no specific preference, he thought “a cardinal in New York” was “very good” a likely reference to Archbishop Timothy Dolan, a prominent conservative voice in the American Catholic Church known for his strong anti-abortion stance.
Trump attended Pope Francis’s funeral last week, marking his first international trip since returning to office. The former pope was often critical of Trump, particularly during the 2016 campaign, when he condemned the then-candidate’s pledge to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.
“Anyone, whoever he is, who only wants to build walls and not bridges is not a Christian,” Francis famously said at the time.
Roughly 20 percent of Americans identify as Catholic, and exit polls from the November election showed that about 60 percent of them supported Trump.

The College of Cardinals is scheduled to convene on May 7 in the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel to begin the process of selecting the next pope.
