Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has criticized former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, accusing him of playing politics with governance and engaging in “propaganda” rather than solutions.
Speaking at the commissioning of two newly completed roads in Abuja’s Mabushi District on Thursday, Wike faulted Obi’s public comments about poor facilities at an FCT school, saying he should have privately drawn attention to the issue.
“It’s not everything you play politics with,” Wike said. “You were governor for eight years in Anambra. Compare what you achieved then with what we’ve done in two years here.”
Wike also alleged that Obi prioritized financial gains over development during his tenure by depositing state funds in a commercial bank instead of using them for projects. He further mocked Obi’s visits to internally displaced persons (IDP) camps and charitable activities, calling them political stunts.
“Doing birthdays in IDP camps doesn’t prove love for Nigeria. Why didn’t you do that when you were governor?” he asked.
Wike challenged Obi to publicly compare his eight-year record in Anambra with the FCT’s progress under his two-year leadership and questioned his ability to manage a country when his party, the Labour Party, remains divided.
He also warned Obi against relying on social media for validation, saying, “You can be president of social media, but not president of Nigeria.”
The verbal clash highlights growing political tension between Wike, a key member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), and Obi, a leading opposition figure. Obi’s camp has yet to respond to the minister’s remarks.
