Arsenal have secured a major boost to their long-term ambitions after defender William Saliba agreed a new five-year contract, keeping him at the Emirates Stadium until 2030.

The 24-year-old France international, who still had two years left on his previous deal, is expected to officially put pen to paper in the coming days. His decision represents a huge show of faith in Mikel Arteta’s project and underlines the club’s commitment to building around its defensive core.

Saliba joined the Gunners from Saint-Étienne in 2019 and spent time on loan at his boyhood club as well as Nice and Marseille before breaking into Arsenal’s first team. Since making his debut in August 2022, he has become indispensable at the heart of defence, making 137 appearances across all competitions.

This extension comes as another statement of intent from Arsenal, following Gabriel Magalhães’ long-term renewal earlier this year. Together, Saliba and Gabriel have developed one of the Premier League’s most formidable centre-back pairings combining composure, positioning, and technical quality with strength, aerial presence, and leadership.

Saliba’s value goes beyond clean defending. He has recovered possession more than any other Arsenal player since his debut and ranks second only to captain Martin Ødegaard in progressive carries. His aerial dominance and high clearance numbers further highlight his all-round contribution.

The Frenchman’s importance was made painfully clear in the 2022–23 season, when a back injury forced him out of the run-in and coincided with Arsenal’s collapse in the title race. Since then, however, he has missed just four league games, proving himself one of the squad’s most reliable performers.

With summer recruits Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié adding depth, Arsenal’s central defence now looks well stocked. But Saliba remains the jewel in the crown his long-term commitment viewed as essential to the club’s ambitions of challenging for both the Premier League and Champions League in the coming years.

Next up for Arsenal is a tough away clash at Newcastle United on Sunday, where Saliba will once again be central to their plans.
