Abia State has announced that its monthly sanitation exercise for the month of September will take place on Saturday, September 27, 2025, from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
According to a statement authorized by the Honourable Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Philemon Asonye Ogbonna, movement of people and vehicles will be restricted during the three-hour period. Only those on essential duties will be exempted, provided they present valid identification or proper authorization when required.
The statement further directed Local Government Chairmen, traditional rulers, town union leaders, religious leaders, as well as youth and women groups across the state to sensitize their communities and actively participate in the exercise.
In addition, all markets, motor parks, transport companies (both public and private), and business premises are expected to remain closed on Friday, September 26, 2025, between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., to carry out their own clean-up ahead of the statewide exercise.
To ensure effective refuse disposal, tippers will be deployed on Saturday to cart away waste materials collected during the exercise. Security agencies including the Nigeria Police, Federal Road Safety Corps, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps have also been directed to assemble at their usual take-off points for deployment.
The Ministry emphasized that residents are expected to remain at home during the exercise, clean their surroundings, and use nose masks while carrying out the activity. It also warned that defaulters will be arrested and prosecuted in line with the Abia State Basic Environmental Law.

The release was signed by Obioma Chidinma Success, Public Relations Officer, on behalf of the Honourable Commissioner.
