The recent call by Hon. Obi Aguocha urging every Igbo community to secure their lives and property has once again brought the issue of security to the forefront. There is no doubt that the safety of our people should remain a collective responsibility. However, beyond public statements, leadership demands practical action and measurable support for those already on the frontlines of community security.

As the duly elected member representing the good people of Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency at the National Assembly, it is fair to ask: What concrete steps have you taken to strengthen local security across our communities? Beyond making passionate appeals, what interventions have you facilitated to ensure that our local security outfits are better equipped to carry out their responsibilities?
Across Ikwuano and Umuahia, we have community-based security structures that have continued to make sacrifices despite operating with limited resources. These men and women patrol our villages, respond to emergencies, gather local intelligence, and work tirelessly to protect lives and property. Their commitment deserves more than words of encouragement; it deserves tangible support.

In Ikwuano/Umuahia communities like Ibeku,Olokoro, umuopara , Ubakala, Ohuhu, oboro, Ariam – local vigilante groups continue to shoulder enormous responsibilities and these community security outfits understand the terrain better than anyone else and often serve as the first line of defense whenever threats arise. Yet, many of them lack the basic equipment required to perform their duties effectively.

If the security concerns raised are indeed as serious as they have been presented, then this is the time to demonstrate leadership through action. Have these local security groups received operational vehicles, motorcycles, communication gadgets, protective equipment, uniforms, flashlights, or other essential logistics through your intervention? These are the questions the people deserve answers to.

Security is not sustained by speeches alone. It requires investment, planning, coordination, and continuous support. A representative who truly recognizes the dangers facing his constituency should also champion legislative and constituency-based initiatives that directly strengthen grassroots security architecture.
Our local vigilantes risk their lives daily, often with little or no government support. Many purchase fuel for patrols from personal contributions, use outdated equipment, and operate under difficult conditions. Imagine how much more effective they would be if they received consistent institutional support from those elected to represent them.

The people of Ikwuano and Umuahia are not asking for miracles. They simply want to see evidence that their representative is matching his concerns with practical interventions. Security begins at the grassroots, and empowering community security outfits remains one of the most effective ways of protecting rural communities.
This is not an attack on anyone’s intentions. Rather, it is a sincere call for accountability. Public office comes with enormous responsibility, and constituents have every right to ask what has been done with the influence and opportunities that accompany such an office.
If community security is truly a priority, then let us see visible partnerships with the relevant security agencies, stronger support for local vigilante organizations and deliberate investments that improve their capacity to safeguard our communities.

The challenges confronting our people require leaders who not only identify problems but also provide lasting solutions. Strong statements should inspire stronger actions, because our people deserve both reassurance and results.
As we continue to pray and work for the peace and security of Ikwuano and Umuahia, let us also remind our leaders that history remembers those whose actions matched their words.

The time has come to move beyond declarations and demonstrate, through practical support and measurable interventions, a genuine commitment to the safety and well-being of every community in our constituency.
