Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to publish the academic certificates and credentials of all candidates seeking elective offices ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi said making the credentials of candidates publicly available would promote transparency, strengthen public trust in the electoral process and enable Nigerians to make informed decisions during elections.
According to him, public office holders and those aspiring to lead the country should be subjected to the highest standards of accountability and openness.
The former Anambra State governor argued that publishing candidates’ educational qualifications and other credentials would help address recurring controversies surrounding certificates and eligibility issues that often dominate Nigeria’s political landscape.
He maintained that transparency in the electoral process is essential for deepening democracy and ensuring that citizens have access to relevant information about those seeking public office.
Obi also stressed the need for electoral reforms that would enhance the credibility of elections and improve confidence in democratic institutions.
The former governor noted that Nigerians deserve leaders whose records and qualifications can be openly scrutinised, adding that openness and accountability remain fundamental principles of good governance.
His remarks come amid increasing debates over electoral reforms and calls for greater transparency in candidate screening processes ahead of the 2027 general elections.
