The political atmosphere in Anambra State is heating up ahead of the November 8 governorship election, as two members of the State House of Assembly have left the Labour Party (LP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The defectors are Hon. Paul Obu, representing Orumba North State Constituency, and Hon. Pat Okafor, representing Onitsha North II Constituency. Their defection is seen as a major setback for the Labour Party, which has struggled to maintain its influence in the state since the last general elections.
APC leaders in Anambra welcomed the lawmakers, describing their move as part of a larger political realignment.
“The reality of what’s coming on November 8 is getting clearer. We welcome these two House of Assembly members and others who are on their way to APC,” party officials said.
Reports suggest that at least ten more lawmakers are currently in talks to join the APC, a development that could further weaken the Labour Party in the state legislature and boost the ruling party’s chances at the polls.

Political observers believe the wave of defections underscores the APC’s determination to mount a serious challenge in the governorship race. With Governor Charles Soludo of APGA defending his seat and Labour Party losing ground, the November election is expected to be one of the most fiercely contested in Anambra’s recent political history.
