The wife of the Abia State Governor, Priscilla Chidinma Otti, has donated a fully furnished three-bedroom apartment to a widow, Mama Mercy Anosike, in Ukome Community, Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State.
The donation forms part of ongoing efforts by the state government to support vulnerable groups, particularly widows, while promoting women’s welfare and empowerment.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Mrs. Otti commended the resilience of Mama Anosike, who reportedly endured severe hardship after losing her children and living under difficult conditions. She disclosed that the governor, Alex Otti, ordered the construction of the house after learning about the widow’s plight, with the aim of providing her with a safe and comfortable home.
Represented at the event by the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Maureen Ahukwa, the First Lady said the gesture demonstrates the administration’s commitment to supporting women and vulnerable citizens.
“This house is a testament to our commitment and a tangible expression of our efforts to empower women and support vulnerable groups in Abia State,” she said.
The Deputy Mayor of Umuahia North Local Government Area, Chinwe Odoemelam, also commended Mrs. Otti for her compassion and dedication to the welfare of disadvantaged members of society. She urged residents to continue supporting the administration of Governor Otti and appealed for improved road infrastructure in the community.
A journalist, Patricia Ngborogwu, who initially drew attention to Mama Anosike’s situation, praised the governor for responding promptly to the appeal.
“We are gathered here not merely to present a building, but to celebrate the restoration of dignity, hope and belonging in the life of a woman who has endured profound loss,” she said.
An emotional Mama Mercy Anosike expressed gratitude for the gesture, describing the new home as a dream come true. She thanked the governor for what she described as inclusive governance and for remembering the less privileged in society.
