Former spokesperson of the Northern Elders Forum, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has accused the administration of President Bola Tinubu of becoming desensitised to the escalating wave of killings and kidnappings across Nigeria.

Speaking during an interview on Trust TV, Baba-Ahmed expressed alarm over the increasing number of attacks on civilians and security personnel, particularly in the northern regions of the country. He warned that the scale of violence should have provoked stronger national outrage and decisive government action.

The elder statesman lamented that communities in the North-West, North-Central and North-East continue to suffer repeated attacks by terrorists, bandits and kidnappers, with many Nigerians either killed, abducted or displaced. According to him, the situation has reached a point where citizens appear to have become accustomed to the constant reports of violence.

Baba-Ahmed criticised what he described as the government’s routine responses to attacks, noting that official reactions often end with public condemnations and press statements rather than concrete actions capable of ending the bloodshed.

He also raised concern over the growing casualties among military personnel deployed to combat insurgents and bandits, warning that Nigeria appears to be losing more lives to internal insecurity than some countries at war.

Calling for urgent intervention, Baba-Ahmed urged President Tinubu to overhaul Nigeria’s security architecture, including the military and intelligence agencies, to restore public confidence and protect citizens. He stressed that the government must act decisively to halt the killings and kidnappings threatening the country’s stability.
