The Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has resigned from office amid mounting impeachment pressure from the state House of Assembly, bringing a dramatic twist to the state’s deepening political crisis.
His resignation, confirmed in a statement by the Kwankwasiyya Movement, was described as a “difficult but necessary” decision taken in the interest of governance stability.
According to the statement, recent developments had significantly constrained his ability to effectively discharge his responsibilities, making his continued stay in office untenable.
The resignation comes against the backdrop of impeachment proceedings initiated by the Kano State House of Assembly over allegations including gross misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of public trust.
Despite the circumstances surrounding his exit, Gwarzo denied any wrongdoing, insisting that his decision to step down should not be interpreted as an admission of guilt. Supporters within the Kwankwasiyya Movement framed the move as an act of political maturity aimed at reducing tension and preserving stability in the state.
The development also reflects broader political realignments within Kano, particularly following shifts in party loyalties and internal divisions that have strained relations within the state’s leadership structure.
With his resignation now effective, attention turns to Abba Kabir Yusuf and the next steps in filling the vacant position, as well as the wider implications for Kano’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
