Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has welcomed the defection of eight lawmakers from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking another shift in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
The lawmakers formally announced their defection at the National Assembly in Abuja, citing the lingering internal crisis within the NNPP as the primary reason for their decision.
Those who switched allegiance include Tijjani Abdulkadir Jobe, Garba Ibrahim Diso, Hassan Shehu Hussain, Idris Dankawu, Muhammad Chiroma Nalaraba, Rabiu Yusuf, Dr Ghali Mustapha Tijjani, and Muhammad Bello Shehu.
The development drew the presence of key APC figures, including former National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje and Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, underscoring the political significance of the defection.
Speaking on the development, Governor Yusuf described the move as part of the democratic process, noting that political realignments are not unusual in a vibrant democracy. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to governance and service delivery, regardless of party affiliations.
The latest defections add to a growing wave of political shifts across party lines, largely driven by internal disputes and strategic positioning ahead of future elections, particularly the 2027 general polls.
