INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan,

The Independent National Electoral Commission has clarified that its chairman, Joash Amupitan, does not operate any personal account on X (formerly Twitter), distancing him from controversial posts circulating online.

The commission made the clarification amid growing speculation linking the INEC boss to a social media account alleged to have engaged in partisan commentary.

Speaking on the issue, INEC’s ICT Director, Lawrence Bayode, reiterated that the chairman has no presence on the platform, stressing that any content attributed to such accounts should be disregarded.

“Based on the official statement issued by the commission… the chairman does not maintain any personal X account. Any content attributed to such an account is not recognised by the commission,” he said.

The clarification follows the resurfacing of posts allegedly linked to Amupitan, which sparked public debate and raised concerns about the neutrality of the electoral body.

INEC, however, described the claims as misleading, warning that impersonation and misinformation pose serious risks to public trust in democratic institutions.

The commission also raised alarm over the activities of cybercriminals who create fake profiles in the names of public officials, noting that such platforms have previously been used to defraud unsuspecting Nigerians.

Authorities said efforts are ongoing in collaboration with security agencies to track and prosecute those behind the impersonation, emphasizing that identity theft and dissemination of false information are punishable under Nigeria’s cybercrime laws.

The development underscores growing concerns over digital misinformation ahead of future electoral activities, as INEC seeks to safeguard its credibility and maintain public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process.
