The Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) has assured residents of the state that it is ready to conduct free, fair, and credible local government council elections scheduled for August 29, 2026.
Anthony Chinedu, the commissioner in charge of information, gave the assurance in Awka on Friday, stating that logistics and operational arrangements for the polls were nearing completion.
According to the commission, the election will cover all 21 local government chairmanship positions and 326 councillorship seats across the state. Chinedu also dismissed concerns that Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo would interfere in the electoral process, insisting that the governor had no intention of influencing or manipulating the outcome.

He explained that the commission had already begun arrangements for non-sensitive materials, while sensitive materials were also being secured ahead of the exercise.
ANSIEC, however, expressed concern over growing voter apathy in the state, urging eligible voters to participate actively and use their votes to shape local governance. The commissioner noted that since the election timetable was released last year, only two political parties had so far fielded candidates, raising questions about the level of participation by other registered parties.
He urged citizens not to stay away from the polls, stressing that refusing to vote would not bring about the change they desire.
