The Bauchi State Police Command has launched a manhunt for an unidentified suspect who brutally attacked a 22-year-old female student of Sa’adu Zungur University in Gadau, Bauchi State.

Police spokesperson Nafiu Habib said the incident occurred on April 23, 2026, at about 7:30 p.m. near Villa Lodge in Itas/Gadau Local Government Area, where the victim, Maryam Yakini, resides off campus.

According to the police, the suspect, armed with a machete and knife, assaulted the student and inflicted severe injuries, including the loss of her left thumb and ear. Authorities said the attacker also robbed the victim of personal belongings, including two ATM cards belonging to Opay and Access Bank, as well as her school identification card.

The injured student was rushed to the Teaching Hospital in Azare, where she is currently receiving treatment and responding positively, police said. The command also dismissed rumours circulating online that the victim had died, describing the claims as false and capable of causing panic among students and residents.

Police urged students to avoid isolated areas, especially at night, while appealing to members of the public to provide useful information that could help track down the suspect.

The latest attack has renewed concerns over student safety in off-campus communities and the growing threat of violent crime in parts of northern Nigeria.
