Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar Dies in Bandits’ Captivity, Katsina Mourns

The Katsina State Government has confirmed the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar while in the custody of bandits, bringing a tragic end to efforts aimed at securing his release.

The former military officer, who served as Director of Defence Information, died nearly two weeks after he was abducted alongside his wife during a journey through Katsina State. Authorities disclosed that he died from complications related to diabetes and hypertension while in captivity.

In a statement issued by the state government, officials expressed deep sadness over the development, describing it as a significant loss not only to his family but also to Katsina State and the nation.

Major General Abubakar and his wife were abducted on May 30, 2026, after armed men intercepted their vehicle along a route in Matazu Local Government Area. Their driver reportedly escaped despite sustaining injuries during the attack.

Prior to his death, security agencies and the Katsina State Government had intensified efforts to secure the release of the retired officer, his wife, and other victims held by bandits. Officials had expressed optimism that ongoing operations would lead to a successful rescue.

Governor Dikko Umaru Radda extended condolences to the family of the late general, describing the incident as a painful reminder of the persistent security challenges confronting communities across the country.

The governor reaffirmed the state’s commitment to working with federal authorities and security agencies to combat banditry and ensure that those responsible for violent crimes are brought to justice.

Major General Rabe Abubakar was widely known for his service to the nation, particularly during his tenure as Director of Defence Information, where he played a prominent role in communicating the activities and operations of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

His death has once again drawn attention to the ongoing security crisis in parts of northern Nigeria, where kidnappings and bandit attacks continue to pose serious challenges despite sustained security operations.
