Former Abia State Governor and Nigeria’s Ambassador-Designate to the Kingdom of Spain, Dr. Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, is among a cohort of newly appointed envoys currently undergoing a mandatory induction programme in Abuja ahead of their formal posting to foreign missions.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that both ambassadors and their spouses are required to participate in the induction exercise, which is designed to equip them with essential diplomatic skills, including engagement with host authorities, conduct at official functions, and proper etiquette in public and international settings.

The three-day programme, scheduled to run from April 27 to 29, will be followed by the commencement of formal postings for envoys who have already secured diplomatic clearance from their host countries.

According to the Ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the induction will go beyond ceremonial briefings, focusing on the practical realities of modern diplomacy, including bilateral engagement strategies, conduct and protocol in host countries, economic diplomacy, and alignment with Nigeria’s foreign policy priorities under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Ikpeazu’s participation in the programme marks a significant milestone in his transition from domestic politics to international diplomacy. He was among the Ambassadors and High Commissioners posted to different countries by President Tinubu, with the postings coming four months after their nomination and subsequent Senate clearance in December 2025.

President Tinubu approved the postings of 65 ambassadors in total, comprising 31 non-career and 34 career diplomats, to Nigeria’s foreign missions across the world and the United Nations. Other prominent figures in the batch include former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode, posted to Germany; former presidential aide Reno Omokri, assigned to Mexico; and former INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, deployed to Qatar.
On the progress of diplomatic clearances, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson said Nigeria will deploy ambassadors to foreign missions following the receipt of agrément from more than 25 host countries, adding that no ambassador-designate would be left without a posting at the end of the process.

Ikpeazu’s appointment drew widespread acclaim from political leaders across party lines. Abia State Governor Alex Otti described the appointment as an opportunity for Ikpeazu to serve the country at the diplomatic level while protecting the interests of Nigerians in Spain, and urged the Federal Government to provide him and other newly appointed ambassadors with the necessary support to succeed in their diplomatic assignments.
The Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party also described the appointment as a well-deserved national assignment, commending President Tinubu for prioritising competence and experience over partisan considerations.

President Tinubu had directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to immediately commence the induction programme for the ambassadors-designate and High Commissioners following the approval of their postings. The exercise is seen as a critical step in rebuilding Nigeria’s diplomatic infrastructure, which had operated with reduced capacity following a mass recall of ambassadors in the early years of the current administration.
