Igwe Bylon Ofodeme praises Philippine education system, urges Nigerians to study abroad

A Nigerian traditional ruler and psychologist based in the Philippines, Bylon P. Ofodeme, has described the Philippine education system as superior to Nigeria’s, urging more Nigerians to take advantage of study opportunities abroad.

The monarch, who holds the title of Igwe Dunu-Igwegbe I of the Anambra State Welfare Association of Philippines, made the remarks during the maiden edition of the Ohaneze Ndi Igbo Cultural Day held in Manila. The event showcased Igbo heritage and brought together members of the Nigerian community in the country.

A doctorate holder in psychology who lectures at two universities in the Philippines, Ofodeme drew from his academic experience in both Nigeria and the Philippines. He stated that in terms of strategy, methodology, and educational systems, the Philippines offers a more effective structure for learning and career advancement.

He noted that obtaining a certificate from a Philippine university significantly improves global employment prospects. According to him, graduates have a higher likelihood of securing better opportunities abroad compared to those with Nigerian qualifications. He also emphasized the uninterrupted academic calendar, contrasting it with the frequent disruptions caused by strikes in Nigeria’s university system.

The Philippines has witnessed a steady rise in international student enrolment, driven in part by the use of English as the primary language of instruction, which removes barriers for Nigerian students. The country has also gained recognition for strong programmes in fields such as healthcare, engineering, and business management, with relatively affordable tuition fees ranging between $2,500 and $5,000 annually for professional courses like medicine.

Beyond academics, Ofodeme advised Nigerians living in the Philippines to respect and adapt to the host country’s culture. He emphasized values such as patience, unity, love, and understanding, while also encouraging individuals to set boundaries when necessary, noting that these qualities are essential for success abroad.
