The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by former Senate President Adolphus Wabara, has assumed control of the party’s leadership following a landmark Supreme Court judgment that nullified its existing national structures.
The development comes after the apex court invalidated the PDP’s November 2025 national convention in Ibadan, which produced the Kabiru Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC), as well as subsequent actions taken by rival factions.
In a statement, Wabara said the BoT stepped in to prevent a leadership vacuum, citing provisions of the party’s constitution that empower it to act in times of crisis.
“It is with a sense of duty that the BoT assumes leadership to ensure stability and continuity,” he said, describing the intervention as a constitutional necessity.
The Supreme Court, in a split decision, upheld earlier rulings that voided the Ibadan convention, ruling that it was conducted in defiance of subsisting court orders.

The court also affirmed the suspension of key party officials, including Samuel Anyanwu, Umar Bature, and Kamaldeen Ajibade, effectively invalidating actions taken under their authority.
The judgment has left the PDP without a recognised National Working Committee, deepening internal divisions within the opposition party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
To address the leadership vacuum, the BoT announced plans to convene an emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting to appoint an interim NWC that will steer the party’s affairs and ensure compliance with electoral timelines.
Wabara stressed that the interim arrangement would help stabilise the party, foster reconciliation among factions, and reposition the PDP for future elections.
The ruling has, however, triggered conflicting interpretations among party leaders, with rival camps laying claim to legitimacy, highlighting the depth of the crisis within the PDP.
Political observers say the outcome marks a critical turning point for Nigeria’s main opposition party as it struggles to rebuild unity and prepare for the 2027 polls.
