File: Peter Obi in Kaduna

Former presidential candidate and politician, Peter Obi, has stated that he would engage and negotiate with agitators if given the opportunity to lead the country, emphasizing that dialogue remains essential in addressing insecurity and resolving conflicts.

Speaking in a viral video, Obi criticized the practice of arresting individuals solely for making inflammatory comments on radio, arguing that such actions are inconsistent with democratic principles. According to him, freedom of expression, even when uncomfortable, should not automatically attract punitive measures.

Obi maintained that if he were in government, he would prioritize engagement, consultation, and dialogue with agitators rather than confrontation. He argued that understanding the grievances behind agitation is necessary for finding lasting solutions to the challenges facing the nation.

The former governor noted that throughout his political career, he has been subjected to criticism and name-calling but does not regard such attacks as offences. Instead, he believes that open discussion remains the most effective way to address disagreements and reduce tensions.

According to Obi, individuals and groups involved in agitation often have underlying reasons for their actions. He stressed that meaningful engagement would help government understand those concerns and create pathways toward resolving insecurity and other related issues.

He reiterated that dialogue is a critical tool for conflict resolution and that lasting peace can only be achieved when all parties are given an opportunity to express their concerns and participate in finding solutions.
