The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has directed all public primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State to begin an indefinite strike following the continued abduction of teachers and pupils in Oriire Local Government Area.

The union said the decision was taken in response to the prolonged captivity of the victims, who were abducted on May 15 when gunmen attacked schools in the Ahoro-Esinele and Yawota communities. The incident involved pupils, students, and teachers from Community Grammar School, L.A. Primary School, and Baptist Nursery and Primary School.

According to the union, uncertainty surrounding the fate of the abducted victims has created fear, anxiety, and tension among teachers, parents, and members of the affected communities. The situation has also reportedly weakened public confidence in the safety of schools across the state.

In a statement issued by the union’s leadership, teachers across Oyo State were instructed to withdraw their services indefinitely until the abducted pupils and teachers are safely rescued and reunited with their families. The NUT said the action is intended to draw urgent attention to the need for intensified rescue efforts and stronger security measures for schools.

The union reaffirmed its solidarity with the victims and their families, stressing that the welfare and security of teachers and learners remain a top priority. It also assured members that engagements with relevant authorities would continue until the abductees regain their freedom.

The strike directive forms part of broader efforts by the union to demand improved protection for schools and learning environments amid rising concerns over attacks on educational institutions in parts of the country.

The development comes amid ongoing rescue operations by security agencies and renewed calls from stakeholders for urgent government intervention to secure the release of the kidnapped pupils and teachers.

Education stakeholders have expressed concern over the impact the industrial action could have on academic activities across Oyo State. However, union leaders maintain that the safety of teachers and students must remain the foremost priority.

As efforts continue to secure the release of the victims, many parents and residents are hoping for a swift resolution that will allow normal academic activities to resume across affected schools.
