The United Kingdom has imposed sanctions on a Russian woman accused of operating a recruitment network that allegedly lured Nigerians and other foreign nationals to fight for Russia in the ongoing war in Ukraine.
The woman, identified as Alexandrovna Polina Azarnykh, was sanctioned under the UK’s Global Irregular Migration and Trafficking in Persons Sanctions Regulations over allegations that she facilitated the movement of vulnerable foreign nationals into Russia before deploying them to support Moscow’s military campaign in Ukraine.
According to British authorities, the recruitment network targeted individuals from several countries, including Nigeria, Egypt, Iraq, Côte d’Ivoire, Morocco, Syria, and Yemen, allegedly using promises of employment and other opportunities to attract recruits before they were sent to the war zone.
As part of the sanctions, Azarnykh has been subjected to an asset freeze, a travel ban, and director disqualification, preventing her from accessing assets in the United Kingdom or engaging in certain business activities.
The UK government said the sanctions form part of broader efforts to disrupt networks accused of exploiting vulnerable migrants to sustain Russia’s military operations in Ukraine. British officials described the alleged recruitment scheme as a form of human trafficking that places unsuspecting individuals in dangerous frontline combat situations.
The development comes amid growing international concern over reports that foreign nationals from several African and Middle Eastern countries have been recruited into the conflict through deceptive job offers and migration schemes.
The sanctions underscore the UK’s continued efforts to target individuals and organisations accused of supporting Russia’s war effort through irregular recruitment, trafficking networks, and other activities linked to the conflict in Ukraine.
