Senator Orji Uzor Kalu

The Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticised a faction of the Labour Party (LP) for what it described as an unwarranted personal attack on Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, the Chief Whip of the Senate and APC leader from Abia North.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the APC faulted the Umuehim Nvosi faction of the Labour Party for abandoning issue‑based politics in favour of personal invective against the senator, who has been in the spotlight amid rising political tensions in the state.

The party said such attacks detract from substantive engagement on governance and development issues, especially at a time when political debate should centre on policies and programmes that affect the lives of Abians.

“This unprovoked and personal attack on Senator Kalu is regrettable and counter‑productive,” the APC statement read. “We call on the LP and all political actors in the state to restrain from personal vilification and instead engage constructively on issues that matter to the people of Abia.”

The APC emphasised that political differences should be resolved through debate and democratic processes, warning against the escalation of rhetoric that could undermine political stability in the state.

Senator Kalu, a former governor of Abia State and a senior figure within the APC, has been a prominent voice in state and national politics, advocating for party consolidation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party’s rebuke of the Labour Party faction comes amid broader political realignments in Abia, where tensions between major parties have intensified. Observers say that how political actors conduct themselves in public discourse could influence voters’ perceptions as the next election cycle approaches.
