Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for removing the fuel subsidy, describing the decision as courageous despite its short-term impact on Nigerians.

Otti made the remarks on Thursday while receiving the Federal Commissioner representing Abia State at the Federal Character Commission, Chief Victor Ikeji, during a courtesy visit at the Government House annex in Nvosi.

The governor, who noted that he had long advocated subsidy reform, said his previous position aligned with the current policy direction of the Federal Government.

“Some of us have held positions in the past that completely align with what the President is doing today. One of them is on the petroleum subsidy,” Otti said.

He added that although the removal may be painful in the short term, it would ultimately benefit the economy.

“It may be painful, because once you indulge in bad behaviour, by the time you are correcting it, somebody must take the pinch somehow. But in the long run, things will correct themselves,” he stated.

Otti also expressed appreciation to the President for appointing Chief Ikeji as Federal Commissioner, describing the decision as commendable and well received by the people of Abia State.

“I want to thank the President for recognising Abia in this way. This is one of the best decisions he has made, and the appointment is appreciated by our people,” the governor said.

He assured that Ikeji would uphold the principles of fairness, equity, and justice in line with the mandate of the commission.

“I can assure you that he will not be found wanting in promoting fairness, equity, and justice, which is the core mandate of the commission,” Otti added.

The governor described Ikeji as a competent choice for the role and urged him to make a positive impact during his tenure, assuring him of the state government’s support.

Earlier, Ikeji commended Otti for what he described as visible developmental strides in Abia State and pledged to discharge his duties diligently.

He said he had already engaged with staff of the commission in the state, emphasising the need for accountability and effective service delivery.
