The Abia and Imo State Governments have unveiled a joint security taskforce to curb rising criminal activities along the Aba–Owerri Expressway ahead of the Christmas holidays.
The initiative was announced after an emergency security meeting held on Thursday, December 4, 2025, between Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, and Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma, at the Imo State Government House, Owerri.
Both governors expressed alarm over recent incidents of kidnapping, armed robbery, and other crimes along the busy route, which has witnessed increased vehicular and human traffic during the festive season.
To restore order and ensure the safety of commuters, the two states agreed to deploy a combined security team made up of military personnel, naval officers, police operatives, DSS officials, and other security agencies.
The joint operation is scheduled to begin on Friday, December 5, 2025, with 24-hour patrols stretching from Owerrinta in Abia State to Owerri in Imo State. The security plan also includes extensive aerial surveillance using drones and advanced monitoring equipment to scan surrounding forests and potential criminal hideouts.
Governor Otti applauded Governor Uzodinma for the swift arrest of suspects linked to the recent attack on his advance team and other travelers on the expressway.
The governors assured residents and travelers of their safety throughout the festive period, warning that anyone apprehended for criminal activity will face stringent sanctions.

The development was confirmed in a statement issued by Ferdinand Ekeoma, Special Adviser to Governor Otti on Media and Publicity, on December 4, 2025.
