Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, on Friday announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), leading a group of 15 lawmakers who also switched parties.

The development was disclosed during the Assembly’s plenary session in Port Harcourt, marking one of the most significant political shake-ups in the state in recent months.

Amaewhule said the decision became inevitable following what he described as a worsening internal crisis within the PDP.

“We can no longer remain in a party where unresolved conflicts have made effective representation difficult,” he said.

Another lawmaker echoed the sentiment, alleging that the PDP had failed to provide a stable environment for legislative duties.

The mass defection is expected to further heighten political tensions in Rivers State, already grappling with prolonged factional disputes within the PDP. As of press time, the party has not issued an official response to the lawmakers’ exit.
