The official unveiling of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a unified opposition platform ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections suffered a major setback on Wednesday, after the Wells Carlton Hotel in Asokoro, Abuja, abruptly cancelled the event reservation just hours before it was scheduled to begin.

The hotel cited an “internal compliance matter” as the reason for the last-minute cancellation, despite the reservation being fully paid for. The decision sparked strong reactions from opposition leaders, with media personality and politician Dele Momodu alleging that political pressure from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) was behind the move. “The intimidation of the opposition by a jittery government continues,” Momodu stated, calling the incident a deliberate attempt to derail the coalition’s plans.

Salihu Lukman, speaking on behalf of the organisers, People and Passion Consult Ltd, condemned the cancellation as a breach of contract and demanded that the hotel honour the original agreement.
The ADC unveiling was expected to bring together top political figures including Atiku Abubakar, David Mark, Peter Obi, and Nasir El-Rufai, among others. Despite the disruption, organisers say the event will still go ahead at a new venue, with details to be announced shortly.
