The Agunechemba security outfit in Anambra State has reportedly neutralized three suspected members of a criminal gang accused of terrorizing communities across the state and allegedly involved in a previous attack on the convoy of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s Chief of Staff.
According to security officials, the operation was carried out on June 23 by personnel from the Agunechemba unit attached to the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Aguata, working in collaboration with police operatives.
Authorities said the suspects were disguised in security uniforms and had allegedly engaged in various criminal activities, including kidnapping, armed robbery, and attacks on residents across parts of Anambra South Senatorial District.
A statement issued by the Media Publicity Secretary of Agunechemba, Comrade Nweke Nweke, said the operation followed extensive intelligence gathering that led security operatives to the Isuofia-Igboukwu axis, where the suspects were reportedly carrying out robbery operations.
The statement noted that upon sighting security personnel, the suspects attempted to flee. Security operatives subsequently launched a coordinated pursuit, sealing off escape routes across the Aguata Council Area.
During the operation, the suspects allegedly opened fire on the advancing security team, prompting an exchange of gunfire. Three members of the gang were reportedly neutralized, while several others escaped with varying degrees of gunshot injuries.
Officials disclosed that no casualties were recorded among members of the Agunechemba security team or the accompanying police operatives.
Security agencies also recovered a cache of weapons and other items believed to have been used in criminal operations. Recovered exhibits reportedly include a Rocket-Propelled Grenade (RPG), AK-47 rifles, ammunition, charms, handbags, and a white Hilux vehicle allegedly used by the gang during operations.
Reacting to the development, security stakeholders described the operation as a major breakthrough in ongoing efforts to combat violent crime and restore public confidence in security across the state.
Authorities have vowed to continue tracking down the fleeing suspects and dismantling criminal networks operating within Anambra and neighboring communities.
