Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has voiced his frustration over the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the FIFA World Cup, saying many Nigerians are unhappy with the team’s absence from football’s biggest tournament.
Wike made the remarks while addressing former Super Eagles captain Joseph Yobo, lamenting that several countries with relatively modest football histories secured places at the tournament while Nigeria failed to qualify.
According to him, watching the World Cup without Nigeria’s participation has been disappointing for millions of football-loving Nigerians who expected the Super Eagles to be among the competing nations.
“Let me use this medium through you to tell the Super Eagles we are not happy. I watched the World Cup, and countries I had never heard of before qualified to play. Yobo, go and tell them we are not happy,” Wike said.
The former Rivers State governor noted that Nigerians are passionate about football and expect the national team to consistently compete at major international tournaments.
His comments reflect widespread disappointment among fans following Nigeria’s failure to secure a place at the global competition, a development that has continued to generate debate about the future of football administration and player development in the country.
Wike, however, expressed hope that the Super Eagles would learn from the setback and work towards a stronger showing in future qualification campaigns.
The Super Eagles remain one of Africa’s most successful football teams, but their recent struggles have prompted calls for reforms aimed at restoring the country’s status as a continental football powerhouse.
