At least 50 elders from a community in Zamfara State have reportedly been abducted by armed bandits while on a peace mission aimed at negotiating the restoration of peace and access to farmlands in the area.

The incident occurred in Magamin Diddi community in Maradun Local Government Area, where community leaders had reportedly embarked on a dialogue initiative with armed groups operating in the region. The elders were said to be seeking a peaceful resolution that would allow residents to return to their farms and resume normal economic activities.

According to reports, the meeting took a dramatic turn when armed bandits allegedly seized the delegates instead of engaging in the expected discussions. Initial reports indicated that dozens of participants were taken captive during the encounter, with estimates ranging between 39 and 50 victims.

The abduction has heightened concerns about the growing insecurity in Zamfara and other parts of Nigeria’s North-West region, where communities continue to grapple with kidnappings, killings, and attacks by armed groups.

Local sources said the peace mission was motivated by the desire to secure safer conditions for farming activities ahead of the cultivation season. Many rural communities in the state have faced restrictions on movement and farming due to persistent threats from bandits.

Security agencies are reportedly working to locate the victims and secure their release, while authorities have continued to caution communities against engaging directly with criminal groups without official authorization.

The latest incident underscores the challenges facing efforts to address insecurity through informal negotiations, as debates continue over the effectiveness and risks of community-led peace initiatives in conflict-prone areas.
