Senate President Godswill Akpabio has stirred political debate after declaring that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is effectively “dead,” following a fresh wave of defections in the National Assembly.
Akpabio made the remark on Tuesday during plenary while announcing the resignation of lawmakers from the ADC to other political parties, including the Labour Party and the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC).
According to him, the increasing number of defections had made parliamentary proceedings repetitive and disorganised, as senators frequently read out individual defection letters on the floor of the chamber.

“Maybe all those defecting from ADC should just compile everything in one paper so we don’t keep announcing, announcing, announcing. Because I think ADC is dead,” he said.
The Senate President further joked that some lawmakers had switched parties multiple times within a short period, questioning the frequency of political realignments.
His comments came amid reports of multiple lawmakers leaving the ADC, citing internal crises and ongoing legal disputes within the party as reasons for their decisions.
The wave of defections has intensified political activity within the National Assembly, as parties reposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
