Heartland FC Technical Manager Emmanuel Amuneke has offered a candid post-season assessment of the Naze Millionaires’ failure to secure promotion back to the Nigeria Premier Football League, pinpointing a disastrous first stanza as the period that ultimately cost the club their NPFL return.
The former FC Barcelona winger and 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup-winning coach with Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets spoke after Heartland wrapped up their Nigeria National League Conference A campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Crown FC Ogbomoso at the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri on Saturday. Jonathan Osondu’s 82nd-minute strike secured the win, but it proved too little, too late for promotion ambitions that had long since slipped away.
Heartland finished the conference in third place with 27 points two behind Beyond Limits Football Academy who secured second spot with 28 points, and two behind Conference A winners Inter Lagos who topped the table on 29 points.
Reflecting on the campaign with characteristic honesty, Amuneke placed the blame squarely on the club’s early-season form.
“To be honest, I think when you reflect back on the whole scenario, you see that we missed the promotion opportunity based on our performance in the first stanza,” he said.
The coach was particularly critical of the team’s failure to convert scoring opportunities into points during that opening phase. “In the first stanza, we were not effective and clinical, even though we created lots of chances in every game. We weren’t clinical in front of goal. In football, scoring goals enables you to win, earn points, and improve your position on the league table,” he stated.
Amuneke acknowledged that the second stanza told a markedly different story, with new additions steadying the squad and correcting many of the individual errors that had plagued their early performances. However, he was under no illusions about the mathematical reality those early dropped points created. “I’m happy with the way we played in the second stanza, but no matter how well we performed, the truth remains that we didn’t do very well in the first stanza.”
On the final-day victory over Crown FC, Amuneke admitted it was far from comfortable, particularly in the opening 45 minutes. “We were not able to control the game in the first half. Instead, we played to the demands of Crown. But in the second half, we stepped up and created chances. We were able to convert one, which gave us victory. Sometimes, it’s not about how well or badly you play being effective in front of goal is what matters.”
The coach also took a moment to express gratitude to Heartland’s supporters for their patience and backing throughout a difficult campaign.
“I really thank them for their support. Football is not mathematics, where one plus one gives two. But the good thing is that in this team, there is a process and a system we are following to ensure that we achieve our objectives in the near future,” Amuneke assured.
For a club of Heartland’s stature and history, another season in the NNL will be a hard pill to swallow. But with Amuneke’s frank diagnosis of what went wrong, there is at least clarity about the areas that must improve if the Naze Millionaires are to mount a more credible promotion push next time around.
