ABUJA — The Nigerian Air Force has initiated a formal investigation into allegations of civilian casualties arising from a recent airstrike in Jilli, a community in northeastern Nigeria, amid growing public concern and calls for accountability.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Air Force confirmed that the operation, which targeted suspected insurgent elements, is now under review following reports that non-combatants may have been affected. Authorities emphasized that the probe aims to establish the facts surrounding the incident and determine whether operational protocols were strictly adhered to.

The NAF reiterated its commitment to precision in air operations and the protection of civilian lives, noting that all missions are conducted based on verified intelligence and in line with international humanitarian standards. However, it acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations and assured that any lapses, if identified, would be addressed decisively.

Residents and local sources have claimed that the strike resulted in unintended casualties, prompting heightened scrutiny from civil society groups and humanitarian observers. While official casualty figures remain unconfirmed, the development has intensified demands for transparency and independent verification.

Military authorities assured the public that findings from the investigation will be made available upon conclusion, reinforcing the Air Force’s stance on accountability and operational integrity.

The incident underscores the persistent challenges faced in counterinsurgency operations, where distinguishing between combatants and civilians remains a critical and often complex task in volatile regions.
